Speaking, workshops, or consulting

I travel and speak frequently on a variety of topics, often having to do with metadata, linked data, and digital library issues.  Additionally, as the creator of MarcEdit, occasionally get inquires related to hosting workshops or training related to MarcEdit or metadata workflows.  If you have a specific inquiry related to speaking, workshops, or consulting, please feel free to contact me.

Brief Bio:

Terry Reese
Associate Professor, Head of Digital Initiatives

Terry Reese serves as the Head of Digital Initiatives for The Ohio State University Libraries.  During his career in Libraries, Terry has worked throughout the Libraries…from interlibrary loan, reference and instruction, processing, cataloging, and finally digital initiatives.  While at Oregon State University, Terry held the prestigious Gray Family Chair for Innovative Library services; leading various grants and open source projects related to discovery and findability of resources.

Since April 2013, Terry has called Columbus home, working with The Ohio State University Libraries to redevelop their digital library infrastructure, and reimagine the Library not only as a destination for collections and services, but as a digital platform that can both support and generate new research.

Terry is a sought-after speaker and instructor related to issues of discovery, digital preservation, and library metadata.  His current research is focused on the ways in which libraries can leverage semantic web techniques to transform legacy library metadata into something new, and exciting.  This work intersects with his development of MarcEdit, a metadata suite that is used tens of thousands of librarians annually from around the world.  The project serves as not only as a platform to conduct research related to metadata reconciliation and the intersections of semantic data and library data, but as a platform for re-imagining library metadata workflows and processing.

Speaking

One of my favorite aspects of being in an academic environment is the expectation that we share our knowledge and experiences with the larger community.  While I active submit proposals to conferences/events that I will be attending — I’m happy to entertain invitations to speak based on my schedule and knowledge of the topic.  In cases where an honorarium is appropriate, just ask — I try to be flexible, especially when working with smaller or regional user communities.

Workshops

I get a number of requests a year in regards to providing workshops for groups related to MarcEdit.  Workshops tend to run the gambit from a general overview of MarcEdit functionality and workflows, to advanced topics around automation and development or specialty topics related to non-MARC metadata processing.  If your group has a specific set of topics or questions that you would like training on — let me know.  I’m happy to customize a workshop to meet your specific needs.

Because workshop preparation and development is a time intensive effort, I have some pretty specific workshop requirements:

Full day Workshop:

  • Typical Schedule: 9 am – 5 pm; with two 15 minute breaks and an hour break for lunch
  • Sessions may be recorded or streamed; all conference materials provided.
  • Honorarium: $1,500
  • Travel Logistics: Reimbursement for all workshop travel related expenses from Columbus, Ohio to the venue and back.  Includes airfare (if applicable), taxis, rental cars (if applicable), lodging, and miscellanea.

Half day Workshop:

  • Typical Schedule: 9 am – 1 pm; with one 15 minute break.
  • Sessions may be recorded or streamed; all conference materials provided.
  • Honorarium: $800
  • Travel Logistics: Reimbursement for all workshop travel related expenses from Columbus, Ohio to the venue and back.  Includes airfare (if applicable), taxis, rental cars (if applicable), lodging, and miscellanea.

These are the two most typical workshop arrangements, though I have given online workshops, multiple day workshops covering varying topics, and a wide range in between.  If you have a question or are interested in hosting a workshop, just let me know.

Consulting

I am willing to consider offers of consulting work, in areas in which I have skills and knowledge to offer to your organization. Fees and agreement will depend on the project and my availability.
